Painting Tips
- Apply a Primer: If you’re furniture has not been primed by us, we recommend you do so first. Use a high-quality primer water-based primer. Apply a thin, even coat with a brush or roller, covering the entire surface, including the edges. Let the primer dry thoroughly as per the manufacturer’s instructions before sanding it lightly with fine-grit sandpaper.
- Choose the Right Paint: Use a good quality water based paint. Egg Shell finishes are often best for furniture, as they provide a durable and easy-to-clean surface.
- Use Quality Tools: We recommend a roller on large flat areas and a quality 3” brush for the internal corners and detailed parts or to create a brushed finish. A foam roller can provide a smooth, even finish on flat surfaces, while a brush is better for detailed areas or edges.
- Apply Thin Coats: Instead of applying a thick coat of paint, apply two thin coats to achieve a smooth and even finish. Thin coats dry faster and are less likely to drip or streak. Allow each coat to dry fully before lightly sanding with fine-grit sandpaper to remove any imperfections or excessive brush marks.
- Ensure Even Coats: When painting shelves and doors, be sure to apply the same number of coats to both sides (i.e. A and B sides)—whether it’s primer or paint.
- Sand Between Coats: After each coat of paint has dried, lightly sand the surface with very fine-grit sandpaper to achieve a smooth finish. This step helps to remove any dust particles or uneven areas and prepares the surface for the next coat.
- Maintain Your Painted Furniture: Clean your painted furniture with a soft, damp cloth and avoid using abrasive cleaners. This will help preserve the finish and keep your furniture looking great for longer.
The paint market today offers a vast range of brands and colours to choose from. While we don’t exclusively partner with any specific companies, we have found that the following brands work exceptionally well on our cabinets: Tikkurila Helmi 10, Little Greene Paint, Farrow & Ball, and Dulux Diamond Hard.

Paint Preparation Tape
To ensure the best possible paint finish, we can apply paint preparation tape to cover the cut edges of our furniture components. This minimises the need for sanding before painting and helps achieve a smooth, professional finish. Preparation tape is an optional extra for all our furniture, and we strongly recommend it for enhancing the quality and speeding up the painting process.

Priming
Our furniture is available with or without priming, dependant on your budget and time.
Primer (undercoat) is essential for preparing surfaces, as it enhances paint adhesion, seals against moisture and stains, ensures uniform coverage, and provides added protection. With a properly primed cabinet, you can easily apply your chosen topcoat of paint after your furniture is installed, resulting in a flawless finish. Choose from our white, light grey, or mid-tone water-based primers which are applied in our spray booth for an even application.
